Engineered Fibre-Mat

fibre-mat2-thumbIn addition to its natural fibre insulation, TTS’ unique nonwoven natural fibre mat line is capable of producing over 100 distinct natural fibre mat products, including weed control fabrics and other geotextiles, air, liquid and gas filters, noise absorbents, a wide variety of automotive parts, and materials for furniture construction.

TTS can currently produce consistent, high-quality samples of natural fibre mat products on a small-scale production line located at our lab in Edmonton, Alberta.

wood-fibreTTS is also in the process of commissioning a commercial-scale natural fibre mat plant to be constructed in Drayton Valley, Alberta, as part of Drayton Valley’s Bio-Mile initiative. A geotechnical survey of the site has been completed and construction is scheduled to begin in August 2009. Production will begin in March 2010 and the plant will reach nameplate capacity by March 2011, processing 50 tonnes per day of natural fibre materials, including aspen and SPF (spruce, pine and fir) wood residue, hemp and flax fibre, cereal straw and municipal fibre waste destined for landfills.

TTS’ nonwoven natural fibre mat line is unique in North America. The production line has two components: a high-capacity DOA airlay system capable of forming nonwovens from a range of natural and synthetic fibres, and a unique back end customized and designed by TTS for short fibre processing. Although there are a number of similar lines operating in Europe using wood fibres to produce automotive composites and insulation, TTS’ line is extremely flexible and has the capability to produce a far wider range of nonwoven products.

Advantages of Air Forming Technology

Air forming technology has a number of advantages over other nonwoven processes:

  • Flexibility – the ability to produce a wide range of products using different fibres;
  • Robustness – the ability to handle irregular fibres with a higher contaminant content, and lower grade fibres (such as natural fibres);
  • High capacity; and
  • Heavy weight (between 500 gsm to 8000 gsm).
